The musical begins Off-Broadway previews at Soho Playhouse September 20.

Florencia Iriondo's musical South is making its Off-Broadway debut at Soho Playhouse (September 20–November 15), and we've got a first listen to one of the tracks from the upcoming recording, due out September 26. Check out the number "Vengo del Sur" in the video above, in a Playbill exclusive.

The pop-folk musical, performed by Iriondo, follows an Argentinian woman from the southernmost tip of South America to New York City on a trip of self-discovery. South has a book, music, and lyrics by Iriondo, with music co-written with Federico Diaz and Luis D'Elias.

As Iriondo tells Playbill, "'Vengo del Sur' is the opening number of South. I was sitting by myself on a teal upright piano in a small apartment in the East Village back in 2014. It's the first song I wrote for the show before I knew exactly how the story would unfold. I did know that I wanted to write (and sing) about the nostalgic feeling I have towards my hometown and how much I miss Argentina, even though I choose to build a life in New York. This song has been with me every step of the (long!) way. And while South has evolved a lot throughout the years and numerous workshops, we've always stayed true to the core theme behind this song, 'I don't know where I go, but I know that I come from the South.'”

Iriondo is accompanied on stage by guitarist Diaz and Latin Grammy Award winner Agustin Uriburu, playing the cello and guitar. Diaz also serves as music director.

The show was developed in residency at The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center and New York Stage & Film, with dramaturgy by Chris Burney. It was previously performed at Nuyorican Poets Café and 54 Below.

The 12-track album is recorded and sound engineered by Sebastian Notte at Estudios Moeblio in Buenos Aires, with mixing by Norberto Villagra of Fort Music and mastering by Gustavo Fourcade of Steps Ahead. Diaz and Uriburu also provide accompaniment on the album.
