After ending its limited engagement March 25, the Broadway production of Farinelli and the King, starring Tony and Oscar winner Mark Rylance, announced that it has recouped its capitalization.
The play, written by Claire van Kampen and directed by John Dove, officially opened at the Belasco Theatre December 17 after beginning previews earlier that month. The Broadway staging reached approximately 112,000 theatregoers, with over 25,000 attending through the production’s $32 ticket initiative.
In addition to Rylance, who played the plagued-by-insomnia King Philippe V of Spain, the cast featured Sam Crane as his insomnia’s potential cure: the renowned castrato singer Farinelli. Grammy-winning countertenor Iestyn Davies made his Broadway debut as the singing voice of Farinelli, alternating performances with James Hall and Eric Jurenas.
The company also included Huss Garbiya, Melody Grove, Lucas Hall, Simon Jones, Edward Peel, Peter Bradbury, and Margot White.
The Broadway production was produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Shakespeare’s Globe (where the play premiered in 2015), and Paula Marie Black.

The production will include Bernstein’s incidental music for Lillian Hellman’s adaptation of The Lark, and Menotti’s The Unicorn, The Gorgon, and The Manticore.
Based on the novel and film by Frank Cottrell Boyce, the new musical will reunite Guettel with Tony-winning Light in the Piazza director Bartlett Sher.
