Ben Weatherill’s new comedy Frank and Percy begins performances in London September 8. Directed by Sean Mathias, the limited run stars Ian McKellen as Percy and Roger Allam as Frank. The production will play The Other Palace through December 3.
Centering on an unexpected relationship between two men, spurred on by the connection between their two dogs, Frank and Percy stars McKellen as Percy, a somewhat radical elder statesman, and Allam as Frank, a widowed school teacher. As their dogs play in the park, the pair attempt to parse out the messy realities of human connection in contrast to predictable canine behavior.
Said Mathias in a previous statement, “I cannot believe my luck in finding this charming and original new play. Ben Weatherill is a true young talent in theatre. To have reunited Ian and Roger after almost 20 years since we all did Aladdin together at the Old Vic is a real coup. Frank and Percy explores the fragility and joy of relationships, and what forges and strengthens bonds between humans, at a time when more than ever, we all need to love and support one another.”
Frank and Percy premiered at the Theatre Royal Windsor, which was followed by two sold-out weeks at Theatre Royal Bath.
This production serves as the launch of The Other Palace's new writing development fund as well: money from each ticket sold will be allocated to a fund providing grants for new writing and new writers.
