You can't keep a star from her spotlight! The Broadway-bound adaptation of TV's Smash held a six-week workshop in NYC ahead of its planned Broadway bow in the 2024-2025 season—and while plot and character details are intentionally being kept under wraps, a wide variety of company members came to the rescue, sharing a bevy of social media content.

The workshop followed an industry reading late last year, with tickets to the public presentation dates on February 8-16 disseminated through a lottery system. Lottery tickets were some of the hottest tickets in town for the first half of February, with fans of the short lived television series clamoring to get in the front door.

Read on for a few little peeks at what the Broadway-bound musical has in store, including Robyn Hurder looking very Marilyn Monroe and a few notes of the overture from the workshop's sitzprobe. 

Tony nominee Hurder shared footage of herself transforming into Marilyn Monroe, captioning the video "So long Ivy…I mean Marilyn….for now. More later. 💋" Hurder previously played the leading bombshell in the musical's 2023 industry reading.

Hurder also shared a variety of photos from the workshop process with the following heartfelt caption.

"I’m still trying to collect my thoughts and wrap my head around what happened over the past 6 weeks…but here are a few photos from the last day of @smashbway workshop/lab/open rehearsal…whatever you want to call it. This experience was what I like to call “Broadway”. Yes, sounds basic…but it really was what Broadway dreams are made of. Every human in their department was at the top of their game. The utmost professionalism. The creative team and every associate were all the unicorns I have been wanting to work with for decades….and the collaboration was so wonderful. The Stage Management team were superhero’s. Everyone at the Danny Kaye were actual angels. Sound, wardrobe, wigs, props, lighting, the crew….it couldn’t have happened without their expertise. The Producers….good golly….did they take care of us. I am so incredibly grateful to Neil, Bob and Steven. Class. Acts. Then there’s this cast. So many I have known for years, some decades, and I finally got to work with them. I fell in love with every single one of them and never, ever, ever got tired of watching them work in the room. It’s the best part about putting up a new show. You gain a new family and get to learn and be inspired by what they bring to the table every day. I must give a special shoutout to those who threw this meat sac around, over and over and over again. I am so severely grateful to you all. This was the hardest moment of my career. I have never worked harder in my life. I have never felt pressure like that. I mean….I WARMED UP. Those who know me, know I kick a leg, pop a squat and then hop onstage. This role is a monster. The level of stamina I needed to gain in a short amount of time was so intimidating. Singing and dancing at the same time is hard and terrifying. Adding a crazy character to that is even harder, but I love the work. I love seeing how far I can go until I drop. I guess I do it for the feeling I have right at this moment. I’m proud of myself. That’s the most important thing to take away from any work we do. Doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Did you make YOURSELF proud. That’s the magic you need to keep making the magic happen. ✨"

Bella Coppola, playing the new role of Chloe, shared an equally heartfelt carousel of images and videos from the rehearsal process, including a clip of her singing "Second Hand White Baby Grand" when the television show was originally airing 12 years ago.

Additional tributes and celebrations poured in from the rest of the cast, including & Juliet cast member Megan Kane, Back to the Future dancer Jonalyn Saxer, and the friends and family of Yvette Nicole Brown.

TikTok sensation and Back to the Future cast member JJ Niemann even went so far as to provide fans with a brief look at the new material that has been incorporated into the shows beloved score, including a snippet of the show's new overture as played during the production's sitzprobe.

In addition to Hurder, Coppola, and Brown, the workshop starred Brooks Ashmanskas, Alex Brightman, Krysta Rodriguez, Nihar Duvvuri, Casey Garvin, and Kristine Nielsen, with Tony winner Susan Stroman directing.

While plot of the upcoming musical differs from the TV series, the storyline still tracks the development of a fictional Marilyn Monroe bio-musical. The book is by Bob Martin (The Prom) and Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), with Some Like It Hot's Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman back writing the score after composing songs for the series.
