J. Harrison Ghee was named the winner of the 2023 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical June 11 at the 76th Annual Tony Awards at the United Palace in Washington Heights.
Ghee is the second non-binary actor to win Broadway's top honor for an acting performance following Alex Newell's Tony win earlier this evening for their performance in Shucked. Ghee won the prize for their work as Jerry and Daphne in Some Like It Hot.
"For every trans, non-binary, gender nonconforming human who were told you couldn’t be seen—this is for you," said Ghee while accepting the award. "'Some like it hot, and that ain’t bad,' and that’s the gospel according to J!"
Others in the category included Christian Borle in Some Like It Hot; Josh Groban in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street; Brian d'Arcy James in Into the Woods; Ben Platt in Parade; and Colton Ryan in New York, New York.
Ghee was previously seen on Broadway as Andre Mayem in the musical adaptation of Mrs. Doubtfire and Lola in the Tony-winning Kinky Boots.
