The play by David Williams is scheduled to transfer to London's West End in 2015 and to Broadway in 2016. Williamson said he would update the play with events such as the recent phone-hacking trial.
"I like taking on the dragon," Cromwell told The Sydney Morning Herald. "And Murdoch is definitely the dragon. I just saw King John, which was really interesting. He doesn't have any soliloquies and never talks about his motives. That's also true of Rupert. Murdoch's reasons are unintelligible to the rest of us."
Cromwell's Broadway credits include Othello and Hamlet. The Academy Award nominee's film work inclues "Babe," "W." and "The Green Mile." He has also appeared on "American Horror Story" and "Boardwalk Empire."
