A handful of theatrical titles are up for 2019 Costume Designers Guild Awards, the nominees for which were announced January 10.
The Excellence in Period Film category includes designer Sandy Powell for the movie musical Mary Poppins Returns, as well as Julian Day for the musical biopic Bohemian Rhapsody; meanwhile, Erin Benach’s work on A Star Is Born and Michele Clapton for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again are nominated in Excellence in Contemporary Film (though roughly half of the latter does take place in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s).
Also among the nominees is Paul Tazewell, the costume designer of such shows as Hamilton, Summer, and Broadway’s upcoming Ain’t Too Proud. The Tony winner was recognized for his designs on NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, which previously earned him an Emmy nomination. He won the Emmy and received a CDG nomination in 2016 for another NBC live musical: The Wiz.
Winners will be announced at the 21st annual ceremony February 19. Click here for the full list of nominations.
