Sheffield Theatres' production of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire begins previews March 1 in the U.K.
Directed by Josh Seymour (Spend, Spend, Spend), performances of the Williams classic are scheduled through March 29 in the Crucible Theatre. Opening night is March 6.
Joanna Vanderham (Double Feature, Richard III, Crime, The Runaway) leads the cast as Blanche Du Bois, joined by Bridgette Amofah as Eunice, Lia Burge as Neighbour/Flower Seller/Nurse, Nuhazet Diaz Cano as Pablo, Jake Dunn as Stanley, Tayla Kovacevic-Ebong as Mitch, Jack Ofrecio as Allan/Young Man/Doctor, Amara Okereke as Stella, and Dominic Rye as Steve.
Director Seymour's creative team also includes designer Frankie Bradshaw, lighting designer Howard Harrison, sound designer and music arranger Alexandra Braithwaite, musical director Lauren Dyer, movement and intimacy director Chi-San Howard, casting director Christopher Worrall, dialect coach Aundrea Fudge, vocal coach Tess Dignan, and fight director Bethan Clark.
A Streetcar Named Desire is set in 1940s New Orleans as
fading Southern belle Blanche Du Bois seeks solace with her estranged
sister Stella. Her delicate sensibilities create instant suspicion in
Stella’s unrestrained husband Stanley, as they collide in a struggle for
Stella’s heart.
A Streetcar Named Desire premiered on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in December 1947, playing 855 performances before closing in December 1949. Directed by Elia Kazan, the original company boasted Jessica Tandy as Blanche, Marlon Brando as Stanley, and Kim Hunter as Stella. Williams' play was awarded the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The production is presented by arrangement with The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. (A separate production of Streetcar, led by Paul Mescal, recently arrived at BAM following a West End encore run.)
