Music, choreographer, and director teams for Goodspeed Musicals' 2023 season at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Connecticut, have been announced.
The season will launch April 18-June 18 with the classic Arthur Laurents-Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim musical Gypsy. Jenn Thompson (national tour of Annie) will direct the Golden Age musical about the world's most famous stage mother with music direction by Goodspeed Resident Music Director Adam Souza (Wicked, Kinky Boots) and choreography by Patricia Wilcox (Motown the Musical).
Donna Feore (Broadway Vacation) will then direct and choreograph the world premiere of Summer Stock, adapted from the MGM/Warner Bros. Running July 7–August 27, the musical comedy, featuring a book by Cheri Steinkellner, will have music supervision by Tony winner Doug Besterman (Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Producers) and music direction by Souza.
Tony winner John Doyle, best known for his actor-musician stagings of Company and Sweeney Todd as well as the Tony-winning revival of The Color Purple, will direct and musically stage The 12, which will play Goodspeed September 8–October 29. Music direction will be by Souza with music supervision by Greg Jarrett (Gigi, Les Liaisons Dangereuses). Set in Jerusalem, Robert Schenkkan and Neil Berg's new musical follows 12 ordinary individuals, who, torn apart by the death of their leader, create one of the most powerful movements ever known.
Closing the season will be Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen's Motown-inspired Dreamgirls, directed by Chicago native Lili-Anne Brown (Goodman Theatre's School Girls, or The African Mean Girls Play). Breon Arzell (Olney Theatre's Fela!) will choreograph the production, running November 10-December 30 and featuring music direction by Souza.
