Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Go go go Joseph! A new film adaptation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is in the works, with Wicked and In the Heights screen director Jon M. Chu at the helm.

Per Deadline, the adaptation has been ordered by Amazon Studios. Chu has recently become a popular director for movie musicals. Following the dual Wicked release, Joseph would become his fourth.

Joseph will reunite Chu with his In The Heights producing partner Scott Sanders, who is partnering with Mara Jacobs alongside Sanders' production company, SGS Pictures. Chu and Lance Johnson will produce on behalf of Chu’s company, Electric Somewhere, with Jane Lee overseeing on its behalf. Benjamin Lowy will executive produce, along with original authors Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. The film will feature a screenplay by Daniel Goldfarb.

Joseph re-imagines the biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, his 11 brothers, and his coat of many colors as a pop vaudeville show. Joseph had its U.S. premiere in May 1970 at the College of the Immaculate Conception in Douglastown, New York. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1982, and has become a favorite at schools and churches worldwide.

A previous film adaptation based on a 1991 West End revival and starring Donny Osmond, Maria Friedman, and Joan Collins was released in 1999.
