Tony Awards Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and Original Cast of Spring Awakening Reunite at the 2022 Tony Awards

After 15 years, the cast came together to perform "Touch Me" at the ceremony.

The original Broadway cast of Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's Spring Awakening reunited at the 2022 Tonys to perform "Touch Me" for the the 75th Annual Tony Awards telecast. The cast has recently been making the press rounds for the HBO documentary Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known, which documented their one-night-only reunion concert held in November 2021.

The production's original cast included Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, Jonathan Gallagher, Jr., Lauren Pritchard, Skylar Astin, Gerard Canonico, Lilli Cooper, Jennifer Damiano, Christine Estabrook, Gideon Glick, Robert Hager, Brian Charles Johnson, Krysta Rodriguez, Phoebe Strole, and Jonathan B. Wright, and Remy Zaken, all of whom appeared in the number at this year's awards ceremony.

Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, the musical layers Sheik's rock-n-roll score over the backdrop of the 19th-century Germany story to tell a story of teenagers discovering their sexuality and rebelling against their conservative parents. The aforementioned documentary is directed by Michael John Warren, who also staged the Tony performance. 

The original production won eight Tony Awards at the 2007 ceremony, including prizes for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score, and a Featured Actor win for John Gallagher Jr. The cast performed a mash-up of songs on that year's telecast, including "Mama Who Bore Me" and "Totally Fucked." Television and stage star Zach Braff introduced the cast for both performances.
