Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, the musical layers Sheik's rock-n-roll score over the backdrop of the 19th-century Germany story to tell a story of teenagers discovering their sexuality and rebelling against their conservative parents. The aforementioned documentary is directed by Michael John Warren, who also staged the Tony performance.
The original production won eight Tony Awards at the 2007 ceremony, including prizes for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score, and a Featured Actor win for John Gallagher Jr. The cast performed a mash-up of songs on that year's telecast, including "Mama Who Bore Me" and "Totally Fucked." Television and stage star Zach Braff introduced the cast for both performances.
