Christopher D. Betts will direct the hit musical about the fictional Motown group the Dreams.

Several Broadway actors will be featured in North Carolina Theatre's upcoming production of the hit musical DreamgirlsDirected by Christopher D. Betts, performances will run February 7-12 at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts' Raleigh Memorial Auditorium.

Starring in the cast will be Broadway's Joy Woods (SIX) as Deena Jones, Nya (Caroline, or Change) as Lorrell Robinson, Saint Aubyn (Ain't Too Proud) as James Thunder Early. Also featured in the cast will be Tamara Jade (The Voice) as Effie White, Najah Hetsberger (Ain't Too Proud national tour) as Michelle Morris, Erick D. Patrick (Mamma Mia!), Jovan E'Sean (The Secret Life of Bees) as C.C. White, and Trevor Johnson (Leaving Eden) as Marty.

Rounding out the cast are ensemble members J. Mahal, Juwon Perry, Matthew Monroe, Sai Graham, Gerard M. Williams, Kameron Askew, Trevor Neal, Deanna Richards, Soraiah J. Williams, Carlita Victoria, Laiya Parker, Mya King, Chanda Branch, and Stephan Emmanuel. Destiny Diamond McNeill and Andrew Coleman will serve as swings.

Focusing on the fictional Motown group the Dreams—famously inspired by the Supremes—Dreamgirls explores the stardom, competition, and love lives surrounding three Black women climbing the ranks of the music industry in the ’60s and ’70s. The musical features a book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger.

The North Carolina Theatre production will have choreography by Betts and Amy Hall Garner, additional choreography by Mya King, music direction by Ilana Atkins, sound design by Eric Alexander Collins, and lighting design by Charlie Morrison.

The original Broadway production won six 1982 Tony Awards, while the 2006 film adaptation took home two Oscars.
