Juliet Stevenson reprises her role as Professor Ruth Wolff in a U.K. tour of Robert Icke's The Doctor that will subsequently play London's West End.

The Almeida Theatre production, also directed by Icke, tours to Brighton (September 5-10), Bath (September 13-17), and Richmond (September 20-24) before transferring to the Duke of York’s Theatre September 29–December 11.

Freely adapted from Arthur Schnitzler's Professor Bernhardi, The Doctor opened at the Almeida in August 2019. The play headlined the Adelaide Festival in 2020 before it was due to transfer to the West End. The transfer was delayed due to the pandemic.

Stevenson is joined by returning cast members Christopher Osikanlu Colquhoun (The Lion King), Mariah Louca (Best Of Enemies), Daniel Rabin (King Lear), Naomi Wirthner (An Evening At The Talkhouse), and Hannah Ledwidge on drums. New company members include Doña Croll (The Heresy of Love), Juliet Garricks (100 Paintings), Preeya Kalidas (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), John Mackay (Oresteia), Matilda Tucker (The Snow Queen), and Sabrina Wu.

The production has designs by Hildegard Bechtler, lighting by Natasha Chivers, sound and composition by Tom Gibbons, and casting by Julia Horan.

Stevenson, who won a Critics’ Circle Award and was nominated for an Evening Standard Award for her performance, said in an earlier statement, “I am beyond thrilled that The Doctor is traveling to Brighton, Bath, and Richmond and then onto the West End. So much has happened in the last two years since we first played the show. I am so excited to share these new resonances and conversations with audiences everywhere we go. Never has this debate been more needed.”

The Doctor will mark the third West End transfer for Icke and Stevenson, following Mary Stuart and Hamlet. She most recently voiced one of the puppets in Icke’s current production of Animal Farm.

The Doctor is produced by The Ambassador Theatre Group and Almeida Theatre, Gavin Kalin Productions, Wessex Grove, Dawn Smalberg, and Richard Winkler.
