Five-time Tony nominee Laura Linney will star in the Manhattan Theatre Club world premiere of Summer, 1976 by Pulitzer Prize winner David Auburn. Previews will begin April 4, 2023 at Broadway's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
Directed by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan (Proof), the new play takes place in Ohio and follows the "unlikely friendship" between Diana, an artist and single mom, and Alice, a free-spirited housewife, as the two help each redefine independence. The work is said to explore "motherhood, ambition, and intimacy." Additional casting, opening night, and creative team to be announced.
Linney last appeared on Broadway in My Name is Lucy Burton, which earned her a 2020 Tony nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Play. Past stage credits include The Little Foxes (also directed by Sullivan), Sight Unseen, the 2002 revival of The Crucible, and the 1992 revival of The Seagull. The four-time Emmy winner also has an extensive screen career, last seen in Netflix's Ozark.
Summer, 1976 was commissioned by MTC through the Bank of America New Play Program.
Manhattan Theatre Club's 2022 Broadway line-up includes Martyna Majok's Cost of Living, which begins previews September 13; and the transfer of London's The Collaboration by Anthony McCarten, starring Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope. The Off-Broadway season will see Where the Mountain Meets the Sea by Jeff Augustin, the world premiere of the best we could (a family tragedy), and King James, with Poor Yella Rednecks, the first show of the 2023-24 season.
