Broadway's current, Tony-nominated revival of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has released the opening number from its upcoming cast album. Listen to 2023 Tony nominee Josh Groban lead the company in "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" above.
A date for the full release has not yet been set. The revival continues its run at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where it opened March 26. Read reviews for the production here.
Groban stars in the production as Sweeney opposite Annaleigh Ashford's Mrs. Lovett. Both are Tony-nominated for their performances, two of the eight nods the revival received last week. See the full list of nominations here.
The revival features Jonathan Tunick's full, 26-piece orchestration for the first time on Broadway since the 1979 original production, under the baton of three-time Tony winner Alex Lacamoire. The forthcoming album, to be released by Warner Music Group’s Arts Music and Reprise Records, is produced by Lacamoire and co-produced by Kail, and can be pre-saved on Spotify here.
The cast also includes Jordan Fisher (Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen) as Anthony, Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things) as Tobias, Tony Award winner and Laurence Olivier Award nominee Ruthie Ann Miles (The King and I) as Beggar Woman, Maria Bilbao (On Your Feet!) as Johanna, Jamie Jackson (The Last Ship) as Judge Turpin, John Rapson (Les Misérables) as Beadle Bamford, and Nicholas Christopher (Hamilton) as Pirelli.
