Williamstown Theatre Festival (WTF) has announced the addition of three new productions to its upcoming season, which is themed around Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire playwright Tennessee Williams.
Many Happy Returns, a dance piece co-created by Monica Bill Barnes and Robbie Saenz de Viteri, choreographed by Barnes, and written by Saenz de Viteri, will be presented July 18-August 3 at the new Massachusetts venue The Annex. The work, originally commissioned by WP Theater, sees both Barnes and Saenz de Viteri taking on the role of Barnes, with Barnes as the artist's body and Saenz de Viteri as the artist's voice. The partially scripted and partially improvised piece tracks Barnes as she voices doubts she's desperate to mask via dance. Playwrights Horizons presented the work Off-Broadway earlier this year.
The Things Around Us, a new solo musical created and performed by Ahamefule J. Oluo, will play The Annex July 17-August 1. The narrative stage show is a collection of seemingly unrelated stories about trying and failing to find order in chaos, backed by a live musical score created through looped trumpet, clarinet, and drums.
WTF will also present Late at the Annex, a series of late-night performances by musicians, comedians, and theatre artists on weekends July 17-August 2. Participating artists and additional information will be announced at a later date.
As previously reported, the upcoming season also includes the world premiere of Slave Play playwright Jeremy O. Harris' Spirit of the People, a new production of Tennessee Williams' Camino Real, a Robert O'Hara-directed staging of Williams' Not About Nightingales, and more.
