Mary Testa Will Star in Re-Envisioned Oklahoma! In the Round | Playbill

News Mary Testa Will Star in Re-Envisioned Oklahoma! In the Round Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical Oklahoma! will receive a new staging from Bard SummerScape in the round.

Directed by Daniel Fish, performances will begin June 25 and continue through July 19 at Fisher Center's LUMA Theater.

The cast will feature two-time Tony nominee Mary Testa (Xanadu, Queen of the Mist) as Aunt Eller, Damon Daunno ("The Following," Brief Encounter) as Curly, Amber Gray (An Octoroon) as Laurey, Patrick Vaill as Jud Fry, Allison Strong (Bye Bye Birdie, Mamma Mia!) as Ado Annie and James Patrick Davis as Will.

Benj Mirman ("Sheeple," "Boy Meets Girl") will play Ali Hakim, Mitch Tebo will play Andrew Carnes and John Carlin will play Cord Elam.

Here's how the production is billed: "Revolutionizing the authentically homegrown art form of musical theatre, their first collaboration, Oklahoma!, is set in the Territory of Oklahoma during the years before statehood, and investigates America’s cultural identity through her frontier roots. Like Lynn Riggs’ Green Grow the Lilacs, the play on which it was based, Oklahoma! combines the sunny romance of farm girl Laurey Williams and cowboy Curly McClain with the darker story of a community rising up against a reviled outsider, Jud Fry."

"For me, Oklahoma! is about the relationship between the individual and the community: what people gain and what they sacrifice when they decide to form a community, whether the union of a married couple, a state, or a nation. It explores the need for that community to create an outsider and the cost of doing so," Fish said in a statement. The production will be staged in a community hall and the songs will be performed in new arrangements for a six-piece Americana band, featuring pedal steel, mandolin and banjo. Musical arrangements are by Daniel Kluger, and choreography is by John Heginbotham.

Based on an original concept by John Conklin, scenic design is by Laura Jellinek, costumes are by Terese Wadden, video projections are by Joshua Thorson and lighting is by Scott Zielinski.
