Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands, devised, directed, and choreographed by Matthew Bourne, will return to the U.K. this fall for the first time in nine years.

The touring production, with a cast to be announced, will launch November 20-25 at Theatre Royal Plymouth before arriving at The Lowry, Salford November 28-December 2. The production will subsequently play a holiday season at London's Sadler’s Wells December 5, 2023-January 20, 2024. The four-month U.K. tour will continue in 2024 with dates at The Marlowe in Canterbury and the Birmingham Hippodrome. Additional tour dates through May 2024 will be announced.

Based on the Tim Burton movie with original story and direction by Burton, original screenplay, story, and co-adaptation by Caroline Thompson, and the music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, Bourne and New Adventures premiered Edward Scissorhands in 2005. The dance production follows Edward, a boy created by an eccentric inventor. When his creator dies, he is left alone and unfinished with only scissors for hands until a woman invites him to live with her suburban family.

The production features new music and arrangements by Terry Davies, based on themes from the motion picture score composed by Elfman. Sets and costumes are designed by Lez Brotherston with lighting designed by Howard Harrison and sound designed by Paul Groothuis

Bourne says, “I’ve always been attracted by ‘outsider’ stories in my work and Edward Scissorhands is the ultimate ‘outsider’ story. Its tale of how we treat people who we perceive as being ‘different’ in our communities has never been more timely, so I’m delighted to be bringing it back after an absence of nine years to theatres throughout the U.K."

New Adventures, Martin McCallum, and Marc Platt produce. Edward Scissorhands is presented by special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatricals.
