Updated 11/12/2024 4:20 PM ET with news of MCC Theater's dimming.
A public memorial celebration will be held for the late beloved actor Gavin Creel December 2 at 4 PM at Broadway's St. James Theatre. Then on December 3 at 6:45 PM, every Broadway theatre will dim its lights in Creel's honor. Off-Broadway's MCC Theater will also dim their lights along with Broadway marquees, in memory of their collaboration on Creel's original musical Walk On Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice.
Creel was originally set to receive a partial dimming ceremony. After immense online outcry, including a petition which accumulated over 20,000 signatures, the Broadway League announced that Creel would receive a full dimming.
A beloved fixture of the Broadway community, Creel passed away September 30 at the age of 48 after battling a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma. Noted for versatile acting performances in a career that saw him often alternate between comedy and drama, leading man and character actor, Creel's numerous Broadway credits included Thoroughly Modern Millie, La Cage aux Folles, She Loves Me, Hello, Dolly!, and more. MCC Theater representatives released the following statement with news of their planned dimming ceremony: "MCC Theater will dim the lights of their theatre in memory of Gavin Creel, in tandem with the Broadway theatres on Tuesday, December 3 at 6:45 PM. MCC was honored to present his original musical Walk on Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice last year and will remember Gavin’s generosity and the ineffable joy his presence brought to everyone."
Donations in Creel's memory are suggested to be made to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.
