The Five Heartbeats, writer-director-producer Robert Townsend’s 1991 film about an all-male musical group during the rise of Motown, is being adapted into a new Broadway musical, according to Deadline.com.
The story is loosely inspired by the behind-the-scenes rise of such groups as The Temptations and The Dells.
Townsend and Keenen Ivory Wayans, who wrote the screenplay, are adapting the film for the stage, and negotiations are reportedly underway.
The stage musical is expected to use the original songs from the film for its score. Townsend has also approached a Grammy Award-winning musician to write an original song for the stage production.
Townsend has also produced a making-of documentary that is currently screening around the country.
