London's National Theatre is adding two new titles to its streaming platform, National Theatre At Home. The theatre's 2023 productions of The Father and the Assassin and The House of Bernarda Alba will join the collection March 1.

Anupama Chandrasekhar's The Father and the Assassin originally played the National in 2022, though the forthcoming streaming version was filmed during its 2023 revival. Indhu Rubasingham, soon to be the National's director and joint chief executive, directed the production, which starred Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi) and Paul Bazely (Cruella). The work follows Mahatma Gandhi (Bazely), the famed lawyer, champion of non-violence, and beloved leader; and Nathuram Godse (Abeysekera), the journalist and nationalist who murdered Gandhi. The play traces Godse’s life over 30 years during India’s fight for independence: from a devout follower of Gandhi, through to his radicalization and their tragic final encounter in Delhi in 1948.

The production also features set and costume design by Rajha Shakiry, lighting design by Oliver Fenwick, movement direction by Lucy Cullingford, music by Siddhartha Khosla (with additional music by David Shrubsole), sound design by Alexander Caplen, and fight direction by Kate Waters.

Federico García Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba was revived by the National in 2023, featuring a new adaptation from Alice Birch (Conversations With Friends) with Rebecca Frecknall (Cabaret) at the helm. The cast features Harriet Walter (Succession) in the title role with Isis Hainsworth as Adela, Rosalind Eleazar as Angustias, and Thusitha Jayasundera as Poncia.

The story follows five daughters forced to live under the tight control of their mother following the death of their father. Tensions mount when one daughter defies all odds and gets a chance to break free.

The production features set and costume design by Merle Hensel, lighting design by Lee Curran, and an original score by Isobel Waller-Bridge.

Though the service mostly offers filmed stage productions from the theatre's NTLive series, both The Father and the Assassin and The House of Bernarda Alba are archival tapings. Titles in the NT At Home collection can be rented individually, with streaming subscriptions also available.

NTLive, which primarily broadcasts productions live to movie theatres worldwide, kicked off its 2024 season with Dear England January 25 and Vanya February 22. The Motive and the Cue is screening March 21, and Nye will hit movie theatres beginning April 23. NT At Home does not have the complete NTLive collection, though many titles find their way to the streamer following the movie theatre run.
