Off-Broadway News Negro Ensemble Announces Our Voices, Our Time Program of One Act Plays

Plays by Cris Eli Blak, Cynthia Grace Robinson, and Mona R. Washington will be presented.

The Negro Ensemble Company (NEC) has announced a program of three one act plays to play the Cherry Lane Theatre from October 19 to November 6. Our Voices, Our Time will include Clipper Cut Nation by Cris Eli Blak, directed by Ralph McCain; What If by Cynthia Grace Robinson, directed by Daniel Carlton; and I Don't Do That by Mona R. Washington, directed by Petronia Paley.

The three programmed plays were selected from a pool of scripts submitted from across the United States, United Kingdom, Morocco, and Trinidad-Tobago. The program will debut October 8 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at Penn Live Arts before coming to New York.

Clipper Cut Nation by Cris Eli Blak is set in a local barbershop run by an owner and his young apprentice. Hometown pride, a rising politician, and gun violence tangle together as questions of forgiveness, redemption, grief, loss, and survival come to the forefront.

What If by Cynthia Grace Robinson examines a mother's fear for her child's life as her daughter fights for justice.

Mona R. Washington's Don't Do That follows a newly engaged couple, Norah, who's African American, and Simon, who's Nigerian, as two of their friends narrate the seemingly blissful romance spiraling into an argument over stereotypes and power.
