Marvin Makes Music, an autobiographical children's book from late A Chorus Line composer Marvin Hamlisch, has gotten the stage musical treatment via book writer and lyricist Caitlin Collins and composer Matthew Lowy. The new work, commissioned and being produced by Holly Weis, will give an industry reading September 26 at Ripley Grier Studios in New York City.
Scott Weinstein is directing the piece, which explores the childhood of Hamlisch before he became a world-famous EGOT-winning composer, arranger, and orchestra leader. Hamlisch, who died in 2012, is best known for his Tony- and Pulitzer-winning musical A Chorus Line, but also composed music for Broadway's They're Playing Our Song, Smile, The Goodbye Girl, Sweet Smell of Success, and Imaginary Friends. He was also an accomplished film composer, writing the Oscar-winning songs "Life Is What You Make It" and "The Way We Were," and the Oscar-winning score to The Sting.
The show is intended to be for audiences aged seven and up.
Michael Hurst (The Hours) will lead the reading's cast as Marvin, with Jill Abramovitz (Beetlejuice) as Marvin's mother Lilly, Price Waldman as his father Max, and Matthew Curiano as Piano, along with Sarah Hamaty and Joy Del Valle.
