The six original musicals that will be part of New York Theatre Barn's 2025 New Works Series—offering excerpts of new shows as well as the chance for the creators to discuss their writing process—have been announced.
The new season will kick off March 31 with T.C. Lind, Phoebe Kreutz, and Derek Gregor's Orchids and Yuriko Shibata and Andrew Strano's Skin. Set in 1950s Florida, Orchids follows Evelyn Pierce, an English professor who falls in love with Betty Kincaid, the new dean at her university. The two set off on a path of self-discovery while a state committee investigates claims of communism at the university. Set on the coast of Western Australia, Skin is an examination of entanglement and the damage that can come from keeping secrets.
Excerpts from Douglas J. Cohen and Eva Margolies' Unzipped and Kate Mulley and Tina deVaron's Female Complaints will be presented May 19. The former, which is set in the Bay Area in the 1970s, explores a culture of sexual liberation and the development of modern sex therapy practices. The latter tells the untold true story of underground abortionist Inez Burns, who ran a successful and illegal abortion clinic for half a century in San Francisco.
The series will conclude in November with The Pelican, written by Will Lacker and Dylan Glatthorn, and Today We Celebrate Earth Day, written by Fernanda Douglas and A.J. Freeman. As a hurricane approaches, The Pelican follows the inhabitants of a Florida coastal town who must decide whether to exchange their freedom for safety in a nearby Corporate City or risk the storm to keep their town alive. During a seemingly ordinary Earth Day celebration, the characters in Today We Celebrate Earth Day learn that Earth has been destroyed, and they are locked in an authoritarian nightmare.
The March and May installments will be presented at 7 PM ET at the Five Angels Theater in Manhattan and will also be streamed live. Additional details, including casting, will be announced at a later date.
