A new stage musical adaptation of the 1995 movie Clueless will premiere in 2024 in the U.K., at Bromley’s Churchill Theatre. Performances will begin February 12, 2024, and continue through February 24.
This new stage musical, which follows an earlier adaptation with a jukebox song list made up of '90s pop hits, will feature an original score with music by "Black Horse and The Cherry Tree" singer-songwriter KT Tunstall and lyrics by Tony nominee Glenn Slater (Sister Act). Amy Heckerling, the film's screenwriter and director, will again pen the musical's book after doing so for the earlier adaptation. Sarna Lapine (Sunday in the Park With George) is directing.
Like the Alicia Silverstone-led film, the musical will follow teen queen Cher, who gives an awkward new student a makeover so she can set her up with the most handsome boy at school. Loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma, the film is a cult favorite.
The earlier iteration of the work played an Off-Broadway run in 2018 with Dove Cameron starring as Cher.
Casting and further creative team members are to be announced.
