Launching next season, the fellowship will provide early-career choreographers with developmental opportunities alongside the theatrical professionals who work on the City Center Encores! series.
Ms. Reinking was one of these professionals; originally a dancer, she choreographed the stripped down Encores! staging of John Kander and Fred Ebb's Chicago, in which she also starred as Roxie Hart. The production was a runaway success, transferring to Broadway, where it continues to play as the longest-running American musical in Broadway history.
The fellowship is constructed to support marginalized choreographers, such as women, artists of color, and gender non-conforming artists. The fellowship, which is paid, endeavors to widen the scope of who constructs movement on the American stage, with selected fellows expected to work alongside the creative teams of a minimum of three musical theatre productions in the Encores! contract.
Ms. Reinking was a wildly successful dancer and choreographer who was instrumental in the continued popularity of Bob Fosse's choreographic style. Read Playbill's full obituary here.
Additional information on the fellowship, including how to apply, will be released at a later date.
