Nimene Wureh (That Damn Michael Che, Inside Amy Schumer) has joined the upcoming world premiere of Kate Douglas’ play The Apiary at Second Stage Theatre. Directed by Kate Whoriskey, Wureh replaces the previously announced Gabby Beans.

The Apiary will be the centerpiece of Second Stage's inaugural Next Stage Festival in the New Year. Opening February 13, 2024 after beginning previews January 31, the production will play Second Stage's Tony Kiser Theater thanks to the New American Voices Fund.

The Apiary will star Obie winner April Matthis (The Piano Lesson, Toni Stone), Lucille Lortel nominee Carmen M. Herlihy (Bachelorette), and Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe nominee Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black, A Month in the Country).

Set 22 years in the future, two lab assistants put a plan in motion to change the world, with the help of a few unusual volunteers.

The Apiary was previously a part of the 2022 Judith Champion Reading Series. The New Play Development at Second Stage is supported by a grant from the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. This season is supported by a grant from the Howard Gilman Foundation.
