Second Half Productions will present a revival of Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning Long Day's Journey Into Night in the West End. Theatre and performance dates will be announced at a later time.
Emmy and Olivier winner Brian Cox will star as James Tyrone with additional casting to be announced. Jeremy Herrin (Wolf Hall, Noises Off) will direct.
The play centers on one day in the life of the Tyrone family in their seaside Connecticut home. Familial bonds begins to unravel, and James and Mary and their sons Jamie and Edmund confront their demons in a final effort to save their family.
Cox says, “It has long been an ambition of mine to play Eugene O’Neill’s flawed patriarch James Tyrone, and I’m delighted to have the opportunity to do so on a West End stage. I’m a great admirer of Jeremy Herrin’s work, and I am looking forward to us delving into O’Neill’s masterpiece together.”
Adds Herrin, “It’s the privilege of a lifetime to direct one of our finest actors in one of the greatest plays ever written. The peerless Brian Cox as James Tyrone is a match for the ages, and a wonderful opportunity to create a deeply moving and cathartic piece of the theatre.”
Succession star Cox, who won his Emmy for his work in Nuremberg, is a two-time Olivier winner for his performances in Rat in the Skull and Titus Andronicus. Film credits include Braveheart, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and The Bourne Identity.
Long Day's Journey Into Night premiered on Broadway in 1956, subsequently winning the 1957 Tony Award for Best Play and the 1957 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
