Patti LuPone is carving out a spooky niche for herself in film and television. Not only has the three-time Tony winner appeared in two seasons of Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story (Coven and NYC), but she's got two more thriller projects coming up. The dark comedy horror film Beau Is Afraid and the Marvel series Agatha: Coven of Chaos.
Although LuPone stopped by The View this morning to promote the new A24 film from director Ari Aster (Midsommer, Hereditary), she also spilled some Agatha details that have so far been under wraps.
Joaquin Phoenix stars in the title role of Beau Is Afraid, about an anxious man on a surreal journey to his hometown to attend the funeral for his overbearing mother—played by Lupone (tapping into her Mama Rose within?). After gushing over Phoenix for a few moments, the women of The View asked Lupone about her upcoming role in the Marvel universe.
As previously announced, Lupone was cast in the WandaVision spinoff from Disney+, but other than casting, few details have been known. According to LuPone, she plays Lilia Calderu, one of the witches in Agatha's coven. Kathryn Hahn created the role of Agatha for WandaVision, which starred Elisabeth Olsen as Wanda and Paul Bettany as Vision.
“We are a coven of witches, and the witches are Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, and the familiar—if anybody knows ‘Heartstopper’—is Joe Locke. And Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, and myself," LuPone reveals. “And I play Lilia Calderu, a 450-year-old Sicilian witch, whose power is divination, and whose trial is tarot.”
No release date has been set yet for Agatha, as the company is still shooting in Atlanta. Beau Is Afraid is available now in select theatres in New York and Los Angeles, and releases wide April 21. See the full interview in the video above.
