Playbill Mixtape: Live Like a Nominee Edition | Playbill

Stage to Page Playbill Mixtape: Live Like a Nominee Edition The songs the 2018 Tony and Drama Desk Award nominees—like Joshua Henry, Ethan Slater, Laurie Metcalf, and more—can’t stop listening to.

Awards season is in full swing and Playbill has been celebrating with the nominees from the 2017–2018 Broadway and Off-Broadway season. While these creative and performers have been inspiring us with their work, we want to know what’s been inspiring them offstage. We asked this year’s Drama Desk and Tony nominees to tell us about the books they’re reading, the movies they’re watching, and the songs they can’t stop listening to for our mini-series “Live Like a Nominee.”

Amy Herzog, Drama Desk nominee for Best Play for Mary Jane: “Sufjan Steven’s songs for Call Me By Your Name I’ve been listening to over and over again.”

Christopher Gattelli, Drama Desk nominee for Choreography for SpongeBob SquarePants and Tony nominee for Choreography for SpongeBob SquarePants and My Fair Lady: “I listen to ’70s on 7, so I’m like a total ’70s junkie. I really am. ‘Take It Easy’ by the Eagles.

Evan Ruggiero, Drama Desk nominee for Actor in a Musical for Bastard Jones: “I can’t stop listening to, I actually have it stuck in my head right now: ‘She Used to Be Mine’ from Waitress, but it’s actually Jeremy Jordan singing it [from the Miscast gala].”

Ben Edelman, Drama Desk nominee for Featured Actor in a Play for Admissions: “There’s this song called ‘May I Have This Dance,’ which features Chance the Rapper. It’s so good, and the music video is awesome.”

Denise Gough, Drama Desk nominee for Actress in a Play for People, Places & Things and Tony nominee for Featured Actress in a Play for Angels in America: “Anything by Rag’n’Bone Man. I think ’Love You Any Less.’ The album Human is the soundtrack of my Angels in America New York experience.”

Jelani Alladin, Drama Desk nominee for Actor in a Musical for Frozen: “‘This Is America,’ Childish Gambino. It came out two days ago and literally we played it 70 times in my dressing room yesterday. In fact, yesterday I did an entire photo shoot based off of the song. I re-planned a whole shoot. It’s a red, white, and blue series that’s going to come out on my Instagram.”

Joshua Henry, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Actor in a Musical for Carousel: “Gosh, I haven’t been listening to that much music to be honest, but ‘This Is America.’”

Sean Carvajal, Special Drama Desk Award for Jesus Hopped the A Train: “I don’t know why, but I’ve listened to a lot of Citizen Cope lately.”

Harry Hadden-Paton, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Actor in a Musical for My Fair Lady: “I have kids and they’re obsessed with My Fair Lady at the moment, and so it has to be our silly old soundtrack.”

Kenita R. Miller, Drama Desk nominee for Featured Actress in a Musical for Once on This Island: “’Somebody to Love.’ Queen is on repeat right now. I know it’s random, but the live version!”

James McArdle, Drama Desk nominee for Actor in a Play for Angels in America: “’Americans’ by Janelle Monae.”

Dane Laffrey, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Scenic Design of a Musical for Once on This Island: “I’m really feeling Janelle Monae right now. So I think ‘Screwed’ by Janelle Monae. That new album is so good.”

Camille A. Brown, Drama Desk nominee for Choreography for Once on This Island: “I’m on another project so I’ve been listening to that music—The Wiz and This Ain’t No Disco for Atlantic Theater.”

Kate Rockwell, Drama Desk nominee for Featured Actress in a Musical for Mean Girls: “‘If It’s Meant to Be It Will Be.’ That is a pop country song and I have no idea who sings it, but it comes on my iTunes all the time.”

Carrie Coon, Drama Desk nominee for Actress in a Play for Mary Jane: “My baby loves jazz, so we’ve actually been listening to a lot of Lee Morgan, who’s a saxophonist, and he’s extraordinary.”

Kyle Jarrow, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Book of a Musical for SpongeBob SquarePants: “I have a two-year-old daughter and she loves Moana. She loves the ‘You’re Welcome’ song. It’s an amazing song. I’ve listened to it 80,000, times and it just gets better. The Rock can really sing.”

Max Vernon, Drama Desk nominee for Outstanding Music for KPOP: “I cannot stop listening to ‘Move’ by TAEMIN. He was one of the singers in SHINee, a K-POP band, and he’s going solo. Even though it’s K-POP, he’s doing this weird, ambisexual, George Michael kind of glam rock thing, and it’s badass.”

Helen Park, Drama Desk nominee for Outstanding Music for KPOP: “I love Dua Lipa.”

Grey Henson, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Featured Actor in a Musical for Mean Girls: “I’m listening to ‘Boys’ by Charli XCX.”

Anthony Boyle, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Featured Actor in a Play for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two: “‘This is America,’ Childish Gambino. I think his work is just insane. He’s f*cking incredible.”

Jessie Mueller, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Actress in a Musical for Carousel: “Brandi Carlile’s new album. Just all the songs on it.”

Ethan Slater, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Actor in a Musical for SpongeBob SquarePants: “I just started listening to Leon Bridges’ Good Thing, which just came out two days ago and can’t stop. Listened to it eight times.”

Sean Bengson, Drama Desk nominee for Outstanding Music for The Lucky Ones: “Liz Phair ‘F*ck and Run.’ It’s the one about the endless one-night stands. It was a big hit in the ‘90s and for whatever reason I didn’t hear it then, and I’ve just had it on loop.”

Abigail Bengson, Drama Desk nominee for Outstanding Music for The Lucky Ones: “Our drummer, Danny Markum, is touring with Childish Gambino, and so we’ve just started to dive into that and it’s bananas.”

Gavin Lee, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Featured Actor in a Musical for SpongeBob SquarePants: “It’s called ‘Kissing Strangers’ by DNCE.”

Alexander Gemignani, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Featured Actor in a Musical for Carousel: “‘Most Things’ by Kurt Elling. I can’t stop listening. He’s a jazz singer.”

Taylor Louderman, Tony nominee for Leading Actress in a Musical for Mean Girls: “‘Diane’ by Cam. It’s like a response to ‘Jolene.’”

Lindsay Mendez, Drama Desk and Tony nominee for Featured Actress in a Musical for Carousel: “Sufjan Stevens, I’m so into him right now. [Our choreographer] Justin Peck works with him a lot, so Justin turned me on to him.”

Laurie Metcalf, Drama Desk nominee for Actress in a Play and Tony nominee for Featured Actress in a Play for Three Tall Women: “Right now I’m hooked on the soundtrack of Singin’ in the Rain because my 13-year-old daughter just played the lead in a community theatre production in L.A. I’ve got those tunes stuck in my head.”

Ari’el Statchel, Tony nominee for Featured Actor in a Musical for The Band’s Visit: “I can’t stop listening to the Chill station on Apple music.”
