Off-Broadway’s Playwrights Horizons has shared its newest group of commissioned playwrights, including the inaugural recipients of the first Peter Schaffer Commissions. The organization partners with various foundations and individuals each year to engage several artists in producing new works.

This year’s cohort includes Dave Harris (Tambo & Bones) and Deborah Stein (Marginal Loss), commissioned through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation/Mellon Foundation Commission while the Kate and Seymour Weingarten Commission has been awarded to Dylan Guerra (The Other Two) and Ianne Fields Stewart (A Dying Breed).

Also featured in the roster of artists are Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust Commission recipient Mia Chung (Catch as Catch Can), Jody Falco and Jeffrey Steinman Commissions for Emerging Playwrights recipient Julia Izumi (Regretfully, So the Birds Are), Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Commission recipient Sarah Mantell (Everything That Never Happened), and Broadway Licensing/Playwrights Horizons Co-Commission recipient Madhuri Shekar (Queen).

Phillip Howze (Self Portraits) and Mara Nelson-Greenberg (Do You Feel Anger?) round out the group as the first playwrights to be commissioned by Playwrights Horizons through the Sir Peter Shaffer Charitable Foundation, and will serve as the inaugural recipients.

“Our commissioning program speaks directly to our identity as an institution committed to playwrights—an organization that believes in providing them resources and support to hone their ability to show us our world in new ways,” said Playwrights Horizons Artistic Director Adam Greenfield in a statement. “It is through commissions that we build enduring relationships with playwrights, on many occasions leading to, or happening in tandem with, productions of their work: as with Julia Izumi and Mia Chung, both of whose groundbreaking work feature in our 2022-23 season, or Dave Harris, whose brilliantly destabilizing Tambo & Bones was staged here earlier this year. We are thrilled to team with so many generous foundations to help playwrights bring eye-opening new work into existence.”
