Tony nominees Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Popular Song Society at their 3rd Annual Gala Benefit June 17.

Held at The Cutting Room, the event will feature a cocktail reception and performances. Michael Lavine will serve as the director, host, and music director for the event.

The performance section of the evening will feature a number of Maltby and Shire alumni, including Loni Ackerman, Danny Bacher, Barbara Blieier, Margery Cohen, Gretchen Cryer, Ed Dixon, Sean Harkness, Judy Kaye, Sally Mayes, Charlotte & Emily Maltby, Christiane Noll, Benjamin Pajak, Austin Pendleton, Steve Ross, Thom Sesma, Elena Shaddow, Jenny Lee Stern, Martin Vidnovic, Mark William, and Walter Willison, with surprise guests on hand as well.

In addition to Lavine on piano, the band will feature Steve Doyle on Bass, Daniel Glass on Drums, and Sean Harness on Guitar.

Both sons of bandleaders, Maltby and Shire first collaborated in 1958. In addition to the team's revue and concert-style music, Maltby and Shire have collaborated on the Broadway musicals Baby and Big. Maltby additionally contributed English lyrics to Miss Saigon and The Pirate Queen and wrote lyrics to Charles Strouse's music for Nick and Nora. Shire contributed two songs to Saturday Night Fever, and famously is the dance arranger behind the original version of "Tick Tock" in Stephen Sondheim's Company.

Established in 1980 as the New York Sheet Music Society, the American Popular Song Society is a New York-based not-for-profit social organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the American songbook. The money raised at this event will support their monthly educational and historical programs.
