Pablo Larraín has directed the film, which features a screenplay by Steven Knight, depicting Callas' final days while living in Paris in the '70s. The singer was a superstar of the opera world, best known for her bel canto soprano voice and deeply felt acting style. Callas was also the subject of Terrence McNally's 1995 play Master Class, which sees her lead a fictional, public master class with several young singers, also near the end of her life.
Jolie leads the cast as Callas, along with Aggelina Papadopoulou as young Maria Callas, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Mandrax, Alba Rohrwacher as Bruna, Pierfrancesco Favino as Ferruccio, Valeria Golino as Yakinthi Callas, Haluk Bilginer as Aristotle Onassis, and Alessandro Bressanello as Giovanni Battista Meneghini.
The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival last month, and will be in select movie theatres in the U.S. beginning November 27. The movie will stream on Netflix beginning December 11.
