Casting and a creative team have been revealed for the Little Island production of ROBESOИ, a new work created and performed by Davóne Tines, with co-creation and direction by Zack Winokur. Performances will run June 26-June 29 at the Little Island Amphitheater, with an official opening set for June 27.
The cast will feature Tines, John Bitoy, and Khari Lucas. Together, the three form the band DAVÓNE & THE TRUTH.
In ROBESOИ, Tines explores the legacy and diverse and dynamic musical repertoire of Paul Robeson, from the stage of Carnegie Hall to a Moscow hotel room, in an attempt to understand Robeson through his own words.
The production will feature scenic design by Adam Charlap Hyman, lighting design by Mary Ellen Stebbins, sound design by Kai Harada, and clothing by Emily Adams Bode Aujla. Betsy Ayer serves as production stage manager.
“I consider Paul Robeson a spiritual ancestor, but I found my connection to him not because of his colossal achievements, but through his most vulnerable moment of almost giving up," Tines said in a statement. "My band THE TRUTH and I wildly reimagine Robeson’s repertoire as the soundtrack to a fever dream journey of almost losing yourself but finding the strength to go on.”'
