Megan Ellis, whose regional theatre credits include Spring Awakening, Rent, Carrie, and more, will star in the title role of the U.K. premiere of Muriel's Wedding the Musical April 10-May 10, 2025, at Leicester's Curve.
Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) will direct the Made at Curve and Global Creatures co-production with choreography by Andrew Hallsworth (Priscilla Queen of the Desert). Ellis will be joined onstage by Annabel Marlow (Six the Musical) as Rhonda Epinstall with additional casting to be announced.
PJ Hogan, who wrote the screenplay for the 1994 film, has
penned the book for the musical, which features a score by Kate
Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall as well as additional songs by Benny
Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson that were originally written
for ABBA.
The musical follows Muriel, who is stuck in a dead-end life in Porpoise Spit but dreams of the perfect wedding. Unfortunately, there’s one thing missing: a groom. Following her dreams to Sydney, Muriel ends up with everything she ever wanted, but that's when things start to go really wrong.
The production will also have set design by Matthew Kinley, costume design by Gabriela Tylesova, projection design by Andrzej Goulding, lighting design by Natasha Chivers, sound design by Adam Fisher, musical supervision by Isaac Hayward, and casting by Stuart Burt.
Winner of five Helpmann Awards, seven Sydney Theatre Awards, an Awgie Award, the 2018 David Williamson Prize, and an ARIA Award Nomination, Muriel's Wedding the Musical celebrated its world premiere in a co-production with the Sydney Theatre Company in November 2017 and returned with an Australian tour in 2019.
The original film featured Toni Colette, Rachel Griffiths, Jeanie Drynan, Sophie Lee, and Bill Hunter.
