Shakespeare Theatre Company has revealed the final production of its 2023-2024 season, The Matchbox Magic Flute. Adapted from the Mozart opera by director Mary Zimmerman, the work will run May 21–June 16, 2024, in the D.C. company's Klein Theatre.
Zimmerman's new take on the opera, a co-production with Goodman Theatre, will feature a cast of 10 and an orchestra of five. The Goodman will premiere the staging prior to STC's run, with performances set for February 10-March 10 at the Chicago theatre. The production will not be Zimmerman's first time staging the audience-favorite opera. Zimmerman directed a more traditional take on the work for Chicago Opera Theater in 1995.
STC's upcoming season opens with Evita directed by Sammi Cannold, playing the D.C. theatre September 5–October 8 following the production's premiere at Massachusetts' American Repertory Theatre. Also planned for the season is Whitney White's Macbeth in Stride, Daryl Cloran's adaptation of As You Like It, The Lehman Trilogy, and a Ralph Fiennes-led Macbeth.
