In a recent interview, Schwartz hinted at progress for the screen adaptation of the Oz-set musical. He and his collaborators are currently discussing what they can do on screen that they couldn't do on stage.
As for Houdini, his Broadway-aimed musical that was announced to star Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman, Schwartz is no longer attached, "although others may pursue it," he said. The project, which was delayed after the show's original book writer Aaron Sorkin departed, was aiming for a 2015-16 Broadway arrival. Continued delays in the show's development also resulted in Jackman's departure from the musical.
Among his upcoming projects, Schwartz said he's at work on lyrics for an animated Bollywood film titled "The Monkeys of Mumbai" with "Slumdog Millionaire" composer A.R. Rahman.
His stage musical adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame currently plays the La Jolla Playhouse with an East Coast arrival at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse in March 2015.
