Straight White Men’s Armie Hammer Shares the Crazy Way He Learns His Lines | Playbill

Video Straight White Men’s Armie Hammer Shares the Crazy Way He Learns His Lines The Call Me By Your Name star reveals his strategy for his Broadway debut.

On July 30, actor Armie Hammer took time on his day off from Second Stage’s Straight White Men to appear on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

The play by Young Jean Lee marks the Golden Globe nominee’s Broadway debut. “As an artist and as someone who wants to constantly grow, you can’t be comfortable. You have to be outside of your comfort zone, and there’s not much more of an area outside of my comfort zone than standing in front of 700 people eight times a week,” said Hammer.

Hammer spoke about the dance-off he and co-star Josh Charles have and how he wound up moonwalking during the dance battle: “As every actor has ever done when you get asked, ‘Can you do that?’ The answer is yes,” he said. “Now I moonwalk eight times a week because I don’t know how to shut my mouth.”

But more fascinating is the way the screen star learned his lines. “I write out every line in the script, because I feel like it gives you more attention to detail. It forces you to pay attention,” he said. “So I write out everybody’s lines, my lines and their lines then I switch to just writing out my lines, then I switch to just writing the first letter of every word of my lines until I end up with a whole page of just random letters and if I can't point to a letter and see the letters on the other side of it and know where I am then I don't know my lines.”

Hammer also spoke about taking his kids around New York and how he and his wife opened bakeries around the country.
