The honorees will be celebrated at the 59th annual ceremony in October.

Recipients of the Henry Hewes Design Award Honors, recognizing artistry on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway stages for the 2022–2023 season, have been announced.

Honorees include Brenda Abbandandolo for the costume design of The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window on Broadway, design team dots for the scenic design of Public Obscenities at Soho Rep/National Asian American Theatre Company, Barbara Samuels for the lighting design of Public Obscenities at Soho Rep/National Asian American Theatre Company, Tei Blow for the sound design of Public Obscenities at Soho Rep/National Asian American Theatre Company, Kameron Neal for the media design of Dark Disabled Stories at the Public Theater, and James Ortiz for the notable effects (puppetry design) of Into the Woods on Broadway.

This year's recipients will be celebrated October 23 at the 59th Annual Henry Hewes Design Awards.

The Henry Hewes Design Awards Committee includes theatre critics Jeffrey Eric Jenkins, chair; David Barbour; David Cote; Naveen Kumar; Brittani Samuel; Helen Shaw; and Martha Wade Steketee. The awards are sponsored by the Henry Hewes Foundation for the Theatre Arts.

Known as the Maharam Awards at their inception in 1965, the Hewes Awards were later renamed the American Theatre Wing Design Awards in honor of the Wing’s sponsorship. In 1999, they became the Henry Hewes Design Awards in honor of critic Henry Hewes, who created the awards and served as a board member of the American Theatre Wing until his death in 2006 at age 89.
