Jonathan Groff has won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical at the 2024 Tony Awards, for his performance as Franklin Shepard in Broadway's now Tony-winning revival of Merrily We Roll Along.
This was Groff's third Tony nomination and first win, following earlier nods for his work in the original production of Spring Awakening and Hamilton. He made his Broadway debut in 2005's In My Life.
Also up for Leading Actor in a Musical were Brody Grant, Dorian Harewood, Brian d'Arcy James, and Eddie Redmayne.
Currently running at the Hudson Theatre through July 7, Merrily We Roll Along features a score by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth. Inspired by a play by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, Merrily follows three friends as they navigate life and careers in the entertainment industry—except the story is told in reverse chronological order. The musical's original production was infamously one of Sondheim's most short-lived, and ended up being the final major collaboration between Sondheim and director-producer Harold Prince after the two revolutionized the art form of musical theatre with a string of landmark shows on Broadway in the 1970s. This production, directed by Maria Friedman, began more than 10 years ago at London's Menier Chocolate Factory, and was an Olivier winner when it transferred to the West End.
Along with Groff, the cast includes fellow 2024 Tony winner Daniel Radcliffe as Charley Kringas and Lindsay Mendez as Mary Flynn, with Krystal Joy Brown as Gussie Carnegie, Katie Rose Clarke as Beth Shepard, and Reg Rogers as Joe Josephson.
