Theatre caricaturist Al Hirschfeld will be the focus of the first special exhibit at The Museum of Broadway, set to open with the museum November 15 in New York City. The exhibition, curated by Al Hirschfeld Foundation Creative Director David Leopold, will take visitors through nine decades of Hirschfeld's landmark images capturing the American theatre from 1928-2002.
Among the shows represented will be the original productions of Fiddler on the Roof, The Phantom of the Opera, The King and I, Sunday in the Park With George, Funny Girl, Ragtime, Beauty and the Beast, and Hairspray, along with portraits of such figures as Meryl Streep, Stephen Sondheim, Julie Andrews, Liza Minnelli, and John Leguizamo.
Also on display will be show posters, album covers, and Playbill covers designed by Hirschfeld; a replica of the barber chair Hirschfeld worked in; and sketchbooks the artist used to plan some of his most iconic artworks.
The Museum of Broadway, founded by producer Julie Boardman and Rubik Marketing founder Diane Nicoletti, will let visitors engage with the history of Broadway from its beginnings in 1732 all the way to today and beyond. Costumes, props, rare photos, videos, and more will be on display in the collection curated by Jennifer Tepper with narration by Julie James. Shows featured in the exhibits include Cabaret, Hair, The Lion King, The Producers, Show Boat, The Ziegfeld Follies, Oklahoma!, The Wiz, Ain't Misbehavin', and Rent, with additional inclusions to be announced.
