Berkeley Rep is presenting the new work, adapted from Ali Benjamin's best-selling novel by Keith Bunin.

A new stage adaptation of Ali Benjamin's best-selling novel The Thing About Jellyfish officially opens its world premiere run at Berkeley Rep in California February 5 after beginning previews January 31. Performances continue through March 9.

Keith Bunin has penned the stage play, centered on a 12-year-old who escapes into her own imagination to cope with the tragic death of her best friend. Tyne Rafaeli is directing, with performances in the company's Roda Theatre.

Matilda Lawler leads the cast as Suzy, alongside Stephanie Janssen as Meg; Kayla Teruel as Franny; Andy Grotelueschen as Dan; Christiana Clark as Franny's Mom, Mrs. Turton, Dr. Legler, and Everyone Else; Antonio Watson as Justin; Lexi Perkel as Aubrey; Robert Stanton as Jamie; and Jasper Bermudez as Dylan. Understudies Colby Kipnes, Rebecca Schweitzer, Cassidy Brown, Maxwell Hamilton, and Sydney Walker Freeman round out the company. Casting is by Stephanie Yankwitt of tbd casting.

The production is presented in association with Madison Wells Live and Emerald Drive, hinting at possible further commercial plans for the project.

Rafaeli's creative team includes movement director Yasmine Lee, scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Linda Cho, lighting designer Lap Chi Chu, sound designer Dan Kluger, and projection designer Lucy Mackinnon.
