But the daytime talk show hosts wanted to know how the two-time Tony nominee got his start acting. Turns out, growing up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the first musical Groff ever did was a homegrown performance of The Wizard of Oz in his father’s barn. “My dad trains and races horses for a living so he has a horse farm and our favorite first production of The Wizard of Oz,” said Groff. Looking at a picture of the classic quartet, Groff is dressed as Dorothy. “My brother was the Tin Man and [friends] Afton and Justin were the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow. All credit to my mom [for those costumes].”
The Tony winners will help writer-director Michael Sarnoski bring a new, modern take on the classic legend to the screen.
The project is currently filming in Dublin.
Hitting theatres this winter, the film will feature music by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Lebo M., and many of the voice actors from the 2019 adaptation of the original film.
The two-time Tony winner explores arts education at four Los Angeles organizations in the new special.

The song will be heard in Peacock's upcoming event series The Tattooist of Auschwitz.
Created, written, and narrated by Tony winner Buckley, The Mayfly is a love letter to music and New York City.
Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Halle Bailey are also in the cast, with Pharrell Williams producing.
Lissette Feliciano is set to write and direct.
