The production marks Rebecca Hall's National Theatre debut, but her father Sir Peter previously ran the venue for a 15-year stint from 1973 to 1988, succeeding founding artistic director Laurence Olivier. Sir Peter Hall, who turned 80 in November, is currently also represented in the West End by his production of Sheridan's The Rivals, currently running at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. His original London productions of Pinter's The Homecoming, Old Times, No Man's Land and Betrayal all transferred to Broadway, as did his National Theatre premieres of Alan Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce and Amadeus (the latter of which he also directed a Broadway revival of). He won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play for both The Homecoming in 1967 and Amadeus in 1981. Rebecca Hall previously made her West End debut in her father's production of Mrs. Warren's Profession at the Strand Theatre (now the Novello) in 2002, for which she won the Ian Charleson Award in 2003. She had first worked with her father, however, ten years earlier when, at the age of ten, she appeared as Young Sophy in his TV adaptation of Mary Wesley's "The Camomile Lawn." She has also subsequently worked with him on stage productions of As You Like It, Shaw's Man and Superman and Galileo's Daughter (both at the Theatre Royal, Bath). Her most recent stage appearance was in Sam Mendes' double bill of The Winter's Tale and Uncle Vanya for the Bridge Project.
The cast for Twelfth Night also includes Cornelius Booth, Simon Callow (as Sir Toby Belch), James Clyde, Marton Csokas (Orsino), Amanda Drew (Olivia), Charles Edwards (Sir Andrew Aguecheek), Tony Haygarth, Samuel James, Richard Keightley, Ben Mansfield, Simon Paisley Day (Malvolio), David Ryall (Feste), Joseph Timms, Jeffry Wickham and Finty Williams (Maria). The production is designed by Anthony Ward, with lighting by Peter Mumford, music by Mick Sands, sound by Gregory Clarke and movement by Jack Murphy. The fight director is Kate Waters, and the associate director is Richard Twyman.
