Video Watch Shucked's Tiny Desk Concert

Listen to renditions of “Independently Owned,” “Maybe Love,” “Somebody Will,” and more in the NPR series.

Broadway's Shucked stopped by NPR for a Tiny Desk Concert, and it sure was a doozy.

Said Tiny Desk producer Josh Rogosin, "There was only one request I made to the creative team for Shucked: I need to see the corn kickline on the Tiny Desk, or it can't happen. Thankfully, choreographer Sarah O'Gleby came down to Washington, D.C. for the recording and made all my dreams come true. Shucked is the most fun you'll have on Broadway this season. There are a lot of great shows to see, but if you want to laugh, Shucked is the ticket. Lucky for us all, it's going on a national tour in the fall of 2024."

Songwriting team Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally have plenty to say about their admiration for the performers interpreting their music for the stage. "The legend is that I threw a shoe," McAnally explains, recalling his excitement after seeing Alex Newell perform 'Independently Owned' for the first time. "But I also threw my book with all my music."

Halfway through the set, Clark starts singing her beautiful ballad written for the show, "Maybe Love," then Isabelle McCalla takes over as her character, Maizy. "We're going to show you the transformation that these songs take," Clark summarizes. "We write very simple songs and we're simple singers, and it's amazing to see our simple songs and voices turned into this."

Appearing in the 22 minute concert are Broadway cast members Andrew DurandAshley D. KelleyJohn Behlmann, Isabelle McCalla, Grey Henson, Alex Newell, and Kevin Cahoon, performing a set list of songs from the show, including “Corn,” “Independently Owned,” “Maybe Love,” “Somebody Will,” “I Do,” and “We Love Jesus.”

The Broadway production of Shucked received nine Tony nominations at the 2023 awards, with Alex Newell winning the award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for their performance as Lulu.

Shucked features music by Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, a book by Robert Horn, choreography by Sarah O'Gleby, and music supervision, music direction, orchestrations, and arrangements by Jason Howland. Scenic design is by Scott Pask with costume design by Tilly Grimes, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, sound design by John Shivers, and wig design by Mia Neal. John Miller is the music coordinator, Billy Jay Stein and Hiro Iida of Strange Cranium designed the electronic music, and Juniper Street Productions handles production management.

For the Tiny Desk concert, a band was assembled including arranger Jason Howland on piano, Kevin Ramessar on guitar, Emma Ford on drums, Jeremy Kittel on the fiddle and mandolin, Alexandria “Lexi” Bodick on the upright bass, and Meg Toohey on guitar.
