New York City Ballet principal dancer Tiler Peck has been a part of the holiday classic The Nutcracker for 18 years. This year she performs in two different versions: George Balanchine’s at the David H. Koch Theatre and the Disney+ original special, the latter entitled The Hip Hop Nutcracker.
Inspired by the live stage version, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is co-created by Jennifer Weber, choreographer of Broadway’s & Juliet and KPOP. The updating of Tchaikovsky’s holiday ballet sets the action in the streets of New York City at a New Year’s Eve block party.
“Being a ballerina isn't just one thing, and I think that's what's incredible about this version. You get to see so much of my versatility and just the dynamics of what a ballerina can be,” shares Peck, who plays the role of the Toy Ballerina in the special now streaming on Disney+. Directed by Nikki Parsons, the cast also includes Mikhail Baryshnikov, KidaTheGreat AKA Kida Burns, the Jabbawockeez as magical snowflakes, and more.
Produced by Done+Dusted, executive producers are Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, Weber, Eva Price and NappyTabs. Choreographers include NappyTabs, Hokuto “HOK” Konishi, Phillip Chbeeb, Makenzie Dustman, Luther Brown, D-Trix, and Weber.
