BREAKDOWN
ROMEO AND JULIET
NOTE: While the characters are written with "he/him" or "she/her" pronouns in the original scripts, we welcome gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to audition for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. In addition, we will list disability when specific to a character, but are otherwise seeking actors of all abilities. Thank you to First Folio Theatre for inspiring the language in this note as we work towards a more inclusive casting process.
NOTE: Seeking all races, gender identities, and abilities. Many roles double. Tracks to be determined once the ensemble is assembled. Actors should be comfortable with heightened language. Movement experience and the ability to play instruments are a plus, as the production will move swiftly and feature live music. The ball will be a "DAY OF THE DEAD" celebration with a surrealist Mexicana dance.
SEEKING:
JULIET: Female identifying, 18, Latinx. The purest center of the play. Grows up through the journey of the play - realizing she's been betrayed by all. The smartest person in the room. There is also an innocence here - disappointment in the betrayals by the adults. Wit. Kindness.
ROMEO: Male identifying, 18, A naïf. Any ethnicity, He thinks he knows what's going on and he truly doesn't. Easily seduced by given circumstances, given fights or love. Subject to his impulses.
TYBALT: Male identifying, early 20s, any ethnicity. Engages in wrestling, sword fighting. Sexy. Rambunctious overgrown boy.
BENVOLIO: Male identifying, early 20s, engages in a LOT of fighting, wrestling, sword fighting. Sexy. Rambunctious overgrown boy. Passionate Latino bro energy. Loves his family and his friends.
MERCUTIO: Non-binary and bisexual. 20 to 25, any ethnicity, Utterly sexual in every way - attracted to men and to women, and they respond. Fiery, wild, obeys nothing and no one - fits no box. Incredibly physical role.
LADY CAPULET: Female presenting. Mid to late 40's, any ethnicity. Scheming and ambitious, cold at heart. A little Lady M truth be told. Her cruelty is more typical of Capulet. Text from the husband will be redistributed to the wife to make her stronger.
LORD CAPULET: Male presenting, late 40's to 50, any ethnicity. Softer, kinder than the traditional Capulet. A romantic like his daughter.
FRIAR: Male Presenting, a youthful 40's, any ethnicity. an ambitious Catholic priest. Trustworthiness is questionable.
NURSE: Female presenting, mid 40's early 50's, any ethnicity. The Nurse is Juliet's closest confidante and is more like a mother to her than Lady Capulet. She is one of the few characters who wants Juliet to be happy and will do anything to ensure her happiness. Comic.
PARIS: Male presenting, late 30's, any ethnicity, Upper class, very rich, more French than not - no accent, but as in Old Society Old World NOT the New World. A decade older than R and J. A marriage prospect for Juliet.
EMPRESS ESCALUS: Female identifying, 50 to 65, any ethnicity. A la Empress Josephine who was in Mexico at this time. The voice of authority and political leader.
