DESCRIPTION

The Big Gay Jamboree at the Orpheum theater is seeking to train a sub automation operator. The sub automation operator is an as-needed position, who would run the automation console as part of the run crew for the show, when the full-time operator is unavailable.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Run show cues on an ETF Automation console. Automated scenery includes a turntable, donut turntable, and automated roll drops.

- Automation Operator also helps with a minimal number of non-automated transitions.

- Inspection of show equipment at preset of each performance.

- Repair or direct the repair of scenic elements, as needed.

- Report on inoperable items to Production and Stage Management, as necessary.

- Recommend maintenance on scenery and automation equipment as observed during the normal operation of the show.

- Arrival on time and ready for work at the start of each call.

- Regular communication via phone, email, and onsite.

- Work with Production Management and ETF representatives to trouble shoot issues in real time, as necessary.

- When covering extended leaves of absence:

o Participation in work calls and rehearsals, as directed by Stage Management.

o Verify and help complete periodic inspection of show equipment and document as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED SKILLS

- Experience as a full-time or sub run crew member

- Experience in the operation or installation of Automation systems (ETF or other) is preferred but not required.

- Comfortable working with computers and troubleshooting electronics.

- Theatrical rigging knowledge, including counterweight assisted linesets.

- Team player, able to work well with others, and communicate clearly over com.

- Available to work evening and weekend hours.

- Comfortable in close quarters.

- Scenic carpentry experience is a plus (woodworking, metalworking, basic mechanics, fabric repairs, etc.)

- Comfortable lifting up to 40 pounds.

- Must be able to work around loud sounds and flashing lights.

- Strong organizational and communication skills.

RATE: $200 per performance, and $40/hour for non-performance calls (rehearsals, workcalls, continuity hours, etc.)

DURRATION:

- Training in the position would take place over 5 – 8 shows (depending on experience) starting ASAP.

- Commitment after training would be as-needed when the full time operator is unavailable.

- Coverage on the track is currently required from 12/19/24 – 1/5/25 (with days off on: 12/24, 12/25, and 1/1)

- Further coverage dates will be requested with as much prior notice as possible, but availability for short notice coverage is a major plus.
