BREAKDOWN

UPSTREAM

This play is co-created with the students of the OWL Community school and will be performed day times for school groups, with as many as 6 public performances. The rest will be school performances.

SYNOPSIS: The River’s Daughter has gone missing, and it is up to the audience, led by fantastical guides, to find her and bring her home. Ultimately, the audience will have to determine what they will do to steward a better world into existence. This immersive and participatory play about climate resilience is being developed with the students of OWL and a number of community partners working in the fields of climate resilience and climate justice.

As the play is still in development, we expect this character list to change from now until first rehearsal (and potentially through rehearsals as well)

SEEKING:

The play will be performed by 4 adult performers alongside an ensemble of student performers cast from Open World Learning Community School. Performers will take on multiple roles from among the following:

Whispers - a chorus of lapping waves that carry the river's stories

River Mother - Our host and quest-giver. Searching for her daughter. By turns calm, healing, raging, sorrowful. Her age gives her gravitas, wisdom, and a longer view of events than humans can fathom.

Mantis Priestess - Speaker for the River. Emcee and connection to the earth. Mistrusts our human audience.

Isla - Teen, lil activist. Needs help confronting her father.

Eradicator - Isla’s father. Runs a factory that is a source of environmental calamity.

Fox - Nervous energy, skittish, sweet. Has a good nose. Our guide to understanding food systems.

Whole Foods Employee - throws away food.

Stream - a vision of the River's daughter.

Pisces - Rebel android with an eyepatch and metal arm. Here to blow up the system.

Siete - one of Pisces' fellow rebels.

Acanthus Maria Justinian Wandersome - ambitious young adventurer trying to make a name for herself.

Hercule P. Trundlemore - world-renowned hunter of antiquities and rare animals. Anachronistic colonial adventurer. Pith helmet, mustache, the whole schtick.

Trashbird - a phoenix made of trash. Puppet.

Koda - a scavenger from the future
