Jean Darling, the first actress to sing "When I Marry Mr. Snow" as the original Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel, died Sept. 4 at age 93.

Darling made her Broadway debut in 1942 with the short-lived revue Count Me In, where she was noticed by Rodgers and Hammerstein, who cast her in their 1945 classic.

In the role of Carrie, who marries fisherman Enoch Snow and bears him a flock of children, Darling also introduced the song "You're a Queer One, Julie Jordan."

It was her final Broadway appearance.

Darling had another claim to fame. Long before her Broadway career, Darling appeared in the silent film era of the "Our Gang" child movie comedies. She reportedly had been one of just a handful of surviving performers from those films. She appeared in 52 of the Hal Roach shorts (renamed "The Little Rascals" for TV syndication) usually as a chubby-cheeked "pretty girl" character. She also appeared without credit in the Laurel and Hardy classic, "Babes in Toyland" (a.k.a. "The March of the Wooden Soldiers").

After Broadway she worked in the early days of TV, and later became a writer of mystery short stories.
